Creating Space During Life Transitions

A Holistic Perspective Shift For Your Heart, Head, and Home

Are you struggling with or anxious about current or upcoming transitions in your life?

Has the pandemic changed your home and left you uncertain about how to reclaim it as sanctuary?

Or has the space for sanctuary gotten smaller and smaller, shoved into random nooks and crannies?

As much as we might want to, pushing how we feel about or react to life changes into a closet and closing the door won’t actually help us move through and - ultimately - transform them.

As we know by now, change is inevitable. Without it we wouldn’t grow, innovate, or transform. It’s how we navigate it that sets us on a path of resilience the next time it knocks on our door.

However, changes that affect your home feel more overwhelming than most primarily because they happen in the place you likely go to de-stress and escape from life changes. What happens when your sanctuary is stressful?! How do you get space or perspective from the place you rely on to serve your most important needs?

In the best of cases, life transitions that affect your home can feel like a temporary bump in the road and disrupt a week or two. Worst-case, they can uproot your life and cause chaos, confusion, and stress for a very long time.

That’s why we have created this on-demand course. To provide in-your-pocket support as you navigate unexpected (or planned) life changes that disrupt not only your home, but your habits and emotional capacity as well.

No one ever tells you how difficult it is to baby proof a New York City apartment. With one FaceTime call, Valerie made suggestions that improved our day-to-day living with a baby and two work from home parents. Once implemented, our child had her spaces, we had our spaces (they were less frequently confused) and she was safer in our home. We were able to say the word “no” much less!

Understanding how to make intentional changes in your home can create more space in your life.

We designed this course to help you take a holistic look at how you navigate change in your life to access more space, not less.

During the weekly lessons, we will not only review how to design and claim more physical space. We will also look at how our habits and emotional patterns manifest in order to create a strategy that feels uniquely supportive and gives you more ease in your future day-to-day.

With an accessible framework utilizing on-the-go podcast audio and quick, 10-minute-max worksheets, this course will help you approach the stress in your head, home, and heart with objectivity and a bit of distance to build resilience.

Let us help you carve out much needed space so you can enjoy life, regardless of what it throws at you.

Before our session I was overwhelmed with ideas and had no focus on where and how to set up my workspace for the school year. By communicating different ways to think about and connect to the spaces in my home, Valerie helped me see and prioritize what I need to have in place to support myself throughout my workday. As I left the session, I was feeling excited and relieved to have a plan that worked specifically for me and was easily achievable.

Four years ago we downsized (1,200sf), but kept some of the furniture from our larger home (2,000sf). Our home office/activity room never functioned as we had hoped it would because of clutter and disorganization. After meeting with Valerie and airing our frustrations and goals, she identified our problems and developed options which we used to transform the space. Her guidance solved our challenge, and we are very pleased with the result.

Who This Is For

This course is for you if you are currently or will be moving through a life shift that affects both your daily habits and your home. It is designed to honor your current challenges, reveal your resources, identify your needs, and put it all together to implement at your convenience. It can help if you are:

  • moving or downsizing your home and feel overwhelmed with creating whole new routines/habits

  • trying to keep babies safe while learning to walk or providing pre-teens with supportive environments

  • navigating health, aging, or different ability challenges within your spaces

  • re-imaging your home while welcoming a co-habitation partner (roommate/lover/spouse/etc…)

  • reclaiming space after losing a co-habitation partner (roommate/lover/spouse/etc…)

  • maintaining boundaries in your private sanctuary while creating a home office or remote working space

  • completely reinventing yourself/your lifestyle/your habits for health or big dreams

Regardless of the type of shift, the process for gaining perspective and implementing supportive shifts are the same. The only difference is the priority for each specific type of change.

Like most people in 2020, my family of three had a sudden transition of accommodating multiple, competing activities in our one-room, Brooklyn studio apartment. It was overwhelming and I wanted help making sense of everything. Working with Spatial Medium provided an easy process of guided explorations and strategic exercises that not only built trust but sparked a perspective shift about creating space I didn’t know I was missing! Once implemented, I was able to see my physical (and digital!) spaces as systems I could design, test, and refine to support my busy family. Spatial Medium was exactly the steady partner I needed during that hectic and all-encompassing transition.

Course Creator and Guide

Hi, I’m Valerie Farber, founder and lead design brain at Spatial Medium™.

I earned a Bachelor’s of Architecture from Syracuse University in 2000, have worked in and adjacent to the building industry for over 20 years, and have a few award-winning projects under my belt. Up until 2020, most of my projects were public space in nature (think libraries, co-working spaces, healthcare environments, and performing arts venues).

When the pandemic hit, I saw most of my friends and co-workers struggling to understand how to navigate their newly over-capacitated home environments. Their sanctuaries were clearly not built to hold all of the day-to-day systems (ie: work, school, socializing, exercising, building, relaxing, connecting, etc…).

As a public space designer, I recognized immediately that their private lives were being encroached upon by their public system needs. So I created a new 1:1 service, the Spatial Pivot Plan, to help individuals find calm and clarity as they re-invented their homes to support their rapidly changing needs. It’s one part design and one part caretaking.

While the Spatial Pivot Plan 1:1 service starts at $1,100.00, this on-demand audio course is designed to deliver a similar framework through a DIY lens. The hope is that it becomes a partner to you as you navigate whatever life change is presenting itself at the moment. Please utilize it as way to shift perspective and approach change in your life and home spaces whenever you feel like things are slipping out of control.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Can I do this with my children/roommates/partner?

Absolutely! In fact, we encourage you to include anyone who lives in your space with you if it feels appropriate and safe to do so. Part of our method is understanding how the overall systems work and if you have multiple people using a space(s), they will certainly affect the systems.

What is the END result of the Spatial Pivot Plan Audio Course? I think it’s a floor plan? Or maybe a meditation practice?

Actually, it’s BOTH (if you want it to be)!

Here at Spatial Medium™, we firmly believe that creating space is both a physical and intangible act and that these go hand-in-hand to design a life that is fully supportive AND able to adapt when changes occur. Our hope is that you move through the course to create a unique-to-you toolbox you can lean on whenever you feel a bit disconnected, overwhelmed, and out of control.

If you need help with understanding and shifting a work/commercial space, please check out our Spatial Experience Consulting services for organizations and corporations re-envisioning their space from an integrated community and program strategy lens.

Why do I need this - can’t I just Marie Kondo my life and be done with it?

Well…you certainly could! However, we find that when in the middle of change or transitions, we may not be able to access joy very readily and - consequently - remove items from our world that might have value to us once we move through the challenge at hand. (We may or may not be speaking from personal experience here…!)

The Spatial Pivot Plan is focused on helping you understand your needs to design unique support into your spaces, regardless of your aesthetic preference (minimalist, bohemian, utilitarian, etc).

What if I don’t have a design background? Or disposable income to purchase all-the-new-things??

It’s ok! We understand that most people who work through this material do not have formal design expertise. Being a designer is mostly about seeing the world just a little bit differently than others and this offer was created to help you gain a perspective shift of your tried-and-true routine.

As far as disposable income, we are big proponents of using what you have on hand to see if a solution will make sense long term. Not only does this help in figuring out what works best with busy life and routines, but it also allows for time to save those pennies (if need be).

Do you collaborate with other entrepreneurs to create custom Spatial Pivot courses for their containers?

We would be happy to talk with you about collaborating! Please tell us more about your offerings in an email and we’ll get back to you ASAP.
