What exactly is Intentional Spacemaking?
During times of transition, we have an opportunity to take stock in how we design, create, and relate to the spaces we inhabit in the world (both tangible and intangible). We get to see how they connect, how they affect each other, and how we can shift them to support us as we move forward.
Here at Spatial Medium, we call this Intentional Spacemaking: where physical spatial design meets caretaking. We have consistently seen a ripple effect of good that comes from a holistic perspective on creating space during transition…for ourselves, our businesses, and our communities!
And…transitions can be hard when tackled alone. Especially now when it seems as though they just.continue.to.happen. Maybe it’s simply the times we’re living through. Or perhaps it’s the phase of life you’re currently moving through.
Either way, change will never disappear entirely. Wouldn’t you love better tools to navigate it?
In this 1-day masterclass, we will:
Identify the most challenging areas of struggle in your current transition
Understand and document your current and desired space, habits, and routines
Create an action plan using your goals/dreams as a guidepost
“Like most people in 2020, my family of three had a sudden transition of accommodating multiple, competing activities in our one-room, Brooklyn studio apartment. It was overwhelming and I wanted help making sense of everything. Working with Spatial Medium provided an easy process of guided explorations and strategic exercises that not only built trust but sparked a perspective shift about creating space I didn’t know I was missing! Once implemented, I was able to see my physical (and digital!) spaces as systems I could design, test, and refine to support my busy family. The Spatial Medium session was exactly the steady partner I needed during that hectic and all-encompassing transition.”
Re-creating space to cultivate joy.
Do you know the “sparking joy” movement? Where you hold up each object in your life and if it doesn’t “spark joy”, you release it?
This isn’t that. We don’t barter with joy here.
During times of transition, joy can sometimes be difficult to find, let alone be a decision-maker. If it’s a transition you chose you may catch glimpses. If you enjoy change, it may be a travel partner. But if your transition was unexpected, it may leave you struggling to navigate your emotions with joy playing an elusive friend.
Here, we listen to and observe our own daily rhythms, persistent desires, and long-held dreams in order to create (and shift) space for them to thrive.
Here, we help you create the best spatial conditions - tangible and intangible - for welcoming joy as a friend. For bringing joy into our communities. And for supporting our way towards it when joy is nowhere to be found.
Life is hard enough without placing expectations on ourselves to maintain joy in all situations…don’t you think? Let’s be more intentional when creating lives for ourselves and our communities.
What clients say about Intentional Spacemaking with Spatial Medium…
“I was overwhelmed with ideas and had no focus on where and how to set up my workspace for the school year. By communicating different ways to think about and connect to the spaces in my home, Valerie helped me see and prioritize what I need to have in place to support myself throughout my workday. As I left the session, I was feeling excited and relieved to have a plan that worked specifically for me and was easily achievable.”
“No one ever tells you how difficult it is to baby proof a New York City apartment. With one FaceTime call, Valerie made suggestions that improved our day-to-day living with a baby and two work from home parents. Once implemented, our child had her spaces, we had our spaces (they were less frequently confused) and she was safer in our home. We were able to say the word “no” much less!”
What life transition is presenting itself to you?
Raise your hand if you see yourself in one of the below scenarios:
You have recently moved and/or moving soon and are overwhelmed at putting a new “house” back together.
You are desperately seeking systems to help you navigate new a live/work/school-from-home situation. The temporary fix you have is not sustainable.
You have new (and old!) habits that are falling by the wayside no matter how hard you try.
You are reaching for a future dream goal but the journey is not feeling the way you want it to - you just want to be “there” already.
You have downsized your living space or office and feel incapable, without the proper tools to adjust to this new lifestyle.
You are tired of an ongoing struggle (pandemic, caring for an aging parent, chronic health issues, etc) and searching for a different kind of support/perspective.
If you’ve identified with any of the above, you’re in the right place!
This workshop will help you gain clarity during the midst of chaos and confusion allowing you to embrace this transition with perspective and calm.
About your guide…
Yep. Me geeking out in and over spatial installations all over the world. Hello!
Hi! My name is Valerie Farber and I developed Intentional Spacemaking™ to help those in transition feel grounded, calm, supported, and even inspired while re-evaluating and re-creating their spaces (both tangible and intangible) during uncertain times or in the midst of conscious big life changes.
Bringing over 20 years of architectural design and spaceplanning experience as well as my own studied and tested experiments with living and working out of many small homes/apartments, I am well versed in the language of creating space regardless of constraints. With a strong self- and community-care practice over the last decade, I utilize unconventional tools to gently investigate the more emotional side of life transitions.
In this masterclass, I will guide you through exploring your space, your habits/rituals, and your dreams to create fully supportive spaces in your day-to-day for the next year or beyond.
If you’ve been wanting holistic support during this challenging time and aren’t ready to invest in one-on-one services, please take advantage of this group masterclass. I look forward to helping you through this transition!
What we’ll develop during our time together:
a unique definition of what “support” means to you in relation to life transitions
spatial exercises that walk you through understanding the constraints, and unseen possibilities, of your space, whether it is a “problem” or not (hint: no space is truly a problem!)
visioning exercises to help identify how you want to feel throughout the journey
behavior exercises to reveal both current + desired habits and what spatially-driven support looks like to you
a digital “evolution map/guide” documenting your space and exercises above with support system priorities and experimenting trackers for refinement in the future
a perspective-shifting system to return to with another space or further evolution in the future
Bonus resources? You betcha!
an Insight App meditation group to support creating internal space as needed
a digital 12 Days of Spacemaking card deck for prompting transformative Qs
The logistics:
When: TBD
Where: From the comfort of your own home via our own private Zoom room

I look forward to working through this transition with you!
Our always question…how do you relate to the spaces you inhabit and/or create in the world?
Here at Spatial Medium, we believe strongly that how we inhabit and create space (both physical and intangible) in the world matters not only to our personal experience, but our community participation as well.
Our Intentional Spacemaking™ offerings will always center around design/systems thinking as well as caretaking (both self and community - we can’t have one without the other!). We have consistently seen a ripple effect of good that comes from a holistic perspective on creating space…in whatever form it may take!
